What is a domain?

A domain name is a sequence of letters and/or numbers separated by one or more periods (e.g. “pathfindmedia.com”). It acts as a pointer to a unique numerical address (IP) on a computer network such as the internet. A domain name always ends with an extension of 2-4 characters. These characters could signify the country associated with the website address (e.g. “.co.uk” for United Kingdom) or give an indication as to the type of organisation involved (e.g. “.com” meaning “commercial”).

Domain names operate under the Domain Name System (DNS), which is essentially the address book of the internet.

This system works with a hierarchy: We get root domains (the primary domain for any given site, such as “pathfindmedia.com”) and then domains dependent on these, called subdomains (e.g. “proposals.pathfindmedia.com”).

Having a domain name ensures the future and the integrity of your brand or initiative. It is like having real estate on the web. Nowadays, securing such a spot on the internet is most often the first thing one does before starting a new venture, and buying the site with your name may also be the very first thing crafty competitors do to keep you from success. We manage domain registration and administration for you. An annual registration fee is applicable to keep your domain.
