Email Spoofing

Email Spoofing

We know that email spam has seen a massive increase ever since the lockdown. SPAM is frustrating, but at least easy to spot. There is a form of SPAM though that is increasing and a little harder to identify if you are not sure what to look for. This form of SPAM is called EMAIL SPOOFING.

Xneelo notes that EMAIL SPOOFING is Faking email headers, by viruses or spammers, and it is common in the distribution of viruses and spam mail via the internet.

It’s easy to get trapped in this form of SPAM. But there is good news! At Pathfind Media, we often get emails from our clients who have received “suspicious” looking emails that turned out to be spoofing. We have compiled some checks that enable you to identify if the email you received is genuine or fake. We have also compiled a shortlist of the steps that you can take once you have received this email.

Identifying Email Spoofing

  1. Check the email sender in the FROM address. Anything placed after the @ sign in the email address is the proper domain.
  2. There is always a button or call to action requesting you to click somewhere. When you hover over the link, look at the link that will pop up. From here, you will see whether the link is legit or spoofing.

What Can You Do?

  1. Do not open any links. You open yourself up to viruses!
  2. Blacklist (block) the email address
  3. Delete the email.
  4. Let your email host turn up the aggressiveness of your SPAM filter.

Final Thoughts

SPAM is very frustrating, and spammers are getting more and more sophisticated by the day, but there are simple steps to avoid being spammed, which will reduce how often you get spammed. We trust that this guide has been beneficial in your battle against SPAM!
